In the current era of computers and the internet, digital multimedia such as photos and videos have become an inseparable part of people's lives. As a part of digital media, photos in modern times are interpreted as digital images taken via a camera or cellphone.     

"A photo no longer has to be in printed form, but can be combined with other digital media such as websites, social media, instant messaging or electronic mail," explained Erwin Mulyadi, a photography practitioner who is also a lecturer at the Indonesian Television Academy (ATVI) in the "Live" event. Streaming Casual Talks on the Terrace LPPM ATVI" with the theme "Photography is the Gateway to the World of Digital Media" which was broadcast via the LPPM ATVI Youtube channel, Thursday (13/1/2022)

In the event hosted by audiovisual practitioners and Head of Student Affairs at ATVI Handy Utama, Erwin said that the ease of taking photos has also made everyone now accustomed to taking photos freely anytime, anywhere, as a hobby or as a profession. The field related to the world of photography and all the rules contained in it is what we usually call photography.

This Casual Talk Event on the Terrace of the ATVI Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) actually contains content that is useful for many groups, especially students and lecturers. This bi-weekly event is a collaboration with Masterpedia, Taman Bacaan Bukit Duri Bercerita, and is supported by Dana, publisher Prenada Jakarta, and Publisher Diomedia, Solo.

Erwin Mulyadi said that studying photography, both theory and practice, can be done independently or through formal/non-formal education. At the ATVI campus, photography is given in semester 2 as initial training to students regarding two main things, namely technical and visual aesthetics, both of which are needed in the field of digital media production such as creating various programs for television broadcasts.

"From a technical perspective, photography discusses tools (cameras and lenses), then lighting concepts and techniques for using a good camera. From a visual aesthetic perspective, photography is much broader and more complex, because it involves feelings, visual messages, and the meaning of a photo," said Erwin.

That's why Erwin explained, even though everyone can take photos with an existing camera, photography is not a simple thing to master and understand. Especially now that many people want to become content creators, with one tool they can take photos and videos that are interesting and liked by   many people. It is absolutely necessary for them to learn photography. In fact, photos and videos have many similar concepts that need to be mastered, for example exposure, focus, lighting, lens focus, image resolution and so on.

- what is the influence of photography in the digital era: If the results are not satisfactory, you can repeat the shot many times. If using an analog camera, the photographer may worry about running out of rolls of film. However, the memory card on a digital camera can store up to hundreds of photos.  

-who pioneered photography in the digital era ; Nicephore Niepce in 1816 succeeded in making a negative image using light on paper which had previously been sensitized with silver chloride and in 1826 succeeded in making the world's first photographic work, an image of a view from the window of Niepce's study on sensitive paper.

- when is photography used in the digital era : The biggest impact of digital photography is the proliferation of taking pictures and sharing images. Starting in 2007, the year Apple introduced its first iPhone, smartphones became ubiquitous, as did image-sharing apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram that allowed users to upload images from their phones to the Internet in seconds.

- why photography is needed in the digital era: Photography has advantages, one of which is being able to record events, moments that are actual, trustworthy and contain value, so that photography can function as a visual-based communication tool.

- where photography is useful for society: A photographic work can be said to have communication value when in appearance the subject is used as a medium for conveying a message or is an idea that is expected of the viewer so that a contact of understanding of meaning is established. In this case, the photo work can also be said to be a medium that has functional use value and at the same time as an instrument because it is used as a tool in the communication process of conveying the message/idea of ​​the content of the creator of the photo work.

- how photography is very important for journalists:  With photojournalism, the content of the news can be implied first. The large influence of photos in the media makes the role of photos increasingly high in conveying information to the public widely and accurately. Photojournalism is an integral part of the news.
